Matala Filter Sheets
The world-renowned progressive filter media. A tough curly-fiber matrix that does mechanical and biological filtration in one — open densities trap heavy solids, fine densities polish the water and host beneficial bacteria. Cut to fit any filter.
Progressive filtration
Run coarse-to-fine so solids are trapped up front and finer layers polish without clogging.
Huge surface area
The 3D web holds enormous biofilm area and, per Matala, ~10x its weight in sludge before clogging.
Easy to clean
Shake or rinse with pond water — no pressure. Cleans in seconds without killing your bacteria.
Cut to fit
Holds its shape; cut with a knife or saw to fit any tank, sieve or chamber.
The four densities
| Color | Density | Surface* | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black (FSM190) | Super coarse | ~190 m²/m³ | Heavy solids, stage 1 |
| Green (FSM290) | Coarse | ~290 m²/m³ | Solids + bacteria |
| Blue (FSM365) | Fine | ~365 m²/m³ | Polish + bacteria |
| Gray (FSM460) | Super fine | ~460 m²/m³ | Final polish |
*Specific surface area, manufacturer spec (Matala). Sheets sold in quarter, half and full sizes.
How much do you need?
A simple rule of thumb: roughly 1-4 full sheets per 1,000 gallons by fish load — 1 for a light water garden, 2-3 for ornamental ponds, 4+ for heavily stocked koi. The heavier the load, the more media.
