How to choose koi food. The right food depends on water temperature and your goal. Above ~60°F, koi digest protein efficiently — use a high-protein staple or growth formula. Below ~60°F, switch to a wheat-germ or easily-digested winter food. For prize color, look for diets with natural carotenoid sources (spirulina, krill, astaxanthin); for size, prioritize protein from marine fish meal. Floating pellets let you watch every fish feed and check health; sinking koi food suits shy fish and reduces surface waste.

What is the best food for koi fish?

The best koi food matches your goal and season: a high-protein staple (35%+) for daily growth, a color enhancer with spirulina or astaxanthin for pigment, and a wheat-germ formula for water below 60°F. Premium Japanese diets like JPD and Nijikawa use marine fish meal and krill for cleaner digestion and lower ash.

How often should I feed koi?

In warm water (68–80°F), feed 2–4 small amounts daily — only what they finish in about 5 minutes. Feeding slows as water cools and should stop below roughly 50°F.

Is sinking or floating koi food better?

Floating food lets you watch fish feed and spot health issues; sinking koi food suits bottom-feeders and shy koi and keeps the surface cleaner. Many keepers mix both.

How long can koi go without food?

Healthy adult koi can go up to about two weeks without feeding in cool water, drawing on natural pond microorganisms and body reserves. Avoid prolonged fasting in warm water when metabolism is high.
