Matala EzBio — a tube of progressive Matala that keeps pumps clean and adds biology
Thread the EzBio onto a pump intake and water passes through a cylinder of Matala tube media before it reaches the impeller. Multiple pore sizes mean it loads slowly instead of blinding off, and the same surface area hosts bacteria — so it is also a compact biofilter at lower flow.

Mystic Koi’s take
Note how differently the same unit rates as a pre-filter vs. a biofilter — biology needs slow, even flow. On a Magna-Flow the 11 Plus is the right one (it is what ships in the EZ pumps); on a bigger pump in a dirty pond use the EzBio 20 and pull the inner gray tube if flow exceeds 10,000 GPH.

The science: why biological filtration matters for koi
Koi excrete ammonia through their gills, and un-ionized ammonia is toxic even at low levels, especially as pH and temperature rise. Nitrifying bacteria living on filter media convert ammonia to nitrite and then to far less harmful nitrate. The more protected surface area a filter offers — and the slower, more even the flow through it — the more bacteria it holds. Progressive-density media gives each stage its own job: coarse grades trap solids, fine grades carry the biofilm.

Which fits my pump?
The 3-step barb fits 1", 1¼" and 1½" intakes; the 11 Plus Magic Adapter fits Magna-Flow pumps directly.
How often do I clean it?
When flow visibly drops — every few weeks in a leafy pond. Rinse in pond water.
