Mystic Koi’s take
Aeration is the one upgrade every koi pond needs and most skip. Pick the kit whose range brackets your gallons at the lower end if the pond is heavily stocked or deep. The Pro 3 Plus is our default for a typical 5,000–8,000 gal backyard koi pond.

The science: why bottom aeration matters more than a waterfall
Oxygen enters water at the surface, and a diffuser’s rising bubble plume lifts bottom water up to the surface in a continuous loop. That circulation is the real work: it de-stratifies the pond, keeps the bottom from going anoxic, and carries ammonia to the filter. Fine bubbles transfer more oxygen per cubic foot of air because of their larger total surface area and slower rise. Warm water holds less oxygen (about 7.6 mg/L at 86 °F vs 11.3 mg/L at 50 °F), which is why summer nights are when koi gasp.

Questions we get about the MEA Pro kit
Where do I put the diffuser?
At the deepest point, but not in the bottom drain’s path. In a koi pond with a skimmer, aim the plume away from the skimmer so you do not fight surface flow.
Can I run it in winter?
Yes — move the diffuser to a shelf about 18" deep so you do not chill the deep water the fish rest in, and it keeps a vent hole open in the ice.
