Juniper Bonsai

The classic bonsai species, and the best place to start. Junipers are evergreen conifers with fine, scale-like foliage that takes well to pinching and wiring, and they hold a shape between trainings better than almost anything else.

Care at a glance: An outdoor tree year-round in Southern California. Full sun to bright afternoon shade. Water when the surface of the soil begins to dry — junipers resent sitting wet. Junipers will not survive as houseplants; they need real sun and a seasonal temperature swing.

Choose your stage:

• Starter — untrained, in a nursery can. Your blank canvas: you choose the front, the style, and the first cut. The most forgiving option to keep alive.
• Wired — shaping wire already on the trunk and main branches with the movement set. Carry on the work from here.
• Potted — planted in a bonsai pot in free-draining bonsai soil, ready to display. Shallow pots dry fast, so plan on daily water in summer.
