Spring hold
Ships in spring, around April. One-time fee per koi. Not refundable if the koi dies during the hold.
Our promise on Japan koi
Importing koi carries risk, and through the trip from Japan and quarantine, that risk is ours. If any of these happen before your koi ships in the standard window:
- Dies in shipping
- Loses its color
- Any health issue
Any of those and you get a full refund.
The fine print, in plain English
Outside of the promise above, koi purchases are final. We can't take a koi back because of a change of mind, because it is a living animal that has been held, shipped and quarantined for you. If you choose a spring hold, we do everything we can to keep your koi healthy and in great condition, but a koi that dies during an extended hold can't be refunded. If your plans change, call us. We'll always try to work something out.

Questions buyers ask
When will I actually get my koi?
It's expected at Mystic Koi late November 2026. It then spends about a month in our quarantine and ships late December through January. We'll call you before it ships to pick the day.
Why does it take so long?
Every koi we import goes through quarantine at our facility before it goes anywhere. It's the single best thing we can do to make sure the fish arriving in your pond is healthy.
What if I can't take it in December or January?
Can't take your koi this winter? Many customers back east need their ponds to thaw first. For a one-time $100 per koi we'll keep it here and ship it in spring, usually around April, on a date we set together. We look after held koi like our own, but a koi that dies during an extended hold can't be refunded.
Can I get a refund if I change my mind?
Outside of the promise above, koi purchases are final. We can't take a koi back because of a change of mind, because it is a living animal that has been held, shipped and quarantined for you. If you choose a spring hold, we do everything we can to keep your koi healthy and in great condition, but a koi that dies during an extended hold can't be refunded. If your plans change, call us. We'll always try to work something out.
How much is shipping, and how are koi shipped?
Koi ship UPS Next Day Air to the continental US, packed in oxygenated bags inside insulated boxes. Shipping is a flat $150 per order, no matter how many koi are in the box, and free when your koi total is $1,500 or more. We'll call you to set a day when someone is home. You're also welcome to pick up at the shop in Upland, CA.
Is the koi in the photo the one I get?
Yes. Unless the listing says it is a bowl or an omakase pick, this listing is for this exact koi, photographed and measured by us.
Can I see it in person?
Of course. Come see us in Upland, CA, or text the shop and we'll send more video.
What does the spring hold cover?
Your koi stays in our ponds after quarantine and ships in spring, usually around April, for a one-time $100 per koi. We look after it like our own, but a koi that dies during an extended hold can't be refunded.
